Reasons why push notifications may not work

To send push notifications to the user, the user must subscribe first. To do this, the user must see the system browser window and click on the “Allow” button.

In some cases, the browser DOES NOT display the subscription window.

1. If your browser believes that your connection to the site is not completely secure.

For example, if the SSL certificate is invalid or the site does not have https content. 
Open your website and look in the browser bar. If you see a green padlock in front of the site address and the “Secure” inscription, it’s all right. If you see a round gray icon, you need to check the SSL certificate and make sure that none of the pictures on the site are loaded with http addresses.

If there is a cross, a crossed-out lock, or a red inscription here, it means that there are serious security problems that must be urgently addressed. In this case, some users will see a blank screen with an angry browser message instead of your site.

On http sites, subscription to push notifications works well. Yet there could still be issues …

2. Notifications are blocked in the browser settings for all sites.

Open your browser settings, find the “Notifications” section, and see if there is a ban on the display of notifications from all sites. For example, in Chrome this can be done as follows:

3. If a user has repeatedly ignored the browser window with the subscription, 

it will no longer appear to that user for the selected domain.

4. If you are in Incognito mode 

(for example, you are checking your widget), the browser will not show you the subscription window, because it does not see the point – you will still be unable to receive push notifications because you’re in Incognito mode.

5. If your browser does not support WebPush technology in Convead. 

Check out the list of supported browsers.

When the browser DOES NOT show push notifications:

1. The user subscribed in one browser, but has now opened the site in another browser (for example, from a phone).

2. The user has unsubscribed from push notifications from your site. We can’t instantly know that a user has unsubscribed in their browser. This information will get to Convead at the next attempt to send a push notification.

You can find out whether you are subscribed to a particular site by clicking on the icon with the lock in the address bar – a window with information will open. Whether you’re subscribed or unsubscribed from receiving notifications, you’ll see this:

3. The user is in Incognito mode. In this case, anything associated with push does not work.

4. The user has blocked receiving notifications from all browsers. Details about this are set out in point 2 of the first block above.

5. Notifications can be blocked by some antivirus software.
